Gift Cards
Millions of dollars in gift cards are purchased by New Yorkers every year, but they can present perils and challenges that can diminish their value at a time when families are struggling to make ends meet.
The Attorney General wants people to know their rights and what they can do to protect themselves when it comes to giving or receiving a gift card. He has compiled a report describing many of the hidden traps consumers face when attempting to use their gift cards, including the danger that their gift cards may become unusable when retailers file for bankruptcy and stores close. The report also describes the unexpected fees and usage restrictions attached to many gift cards. It also explains consumers' rights under New York law and discusses needed changes to state and federal law. Finally, the report includes important tips consumers should read before purchasing gift cards for relatives and friends, and to get the most value out of the gift cards they will receive throughout the year.
