A.G. Names Chief Of Investigations

Attorney General Spitzer today announced the appointment of William M. Casey, Deputy Chief of the New York City Police Department, as Chief Investigator of the New York State Department of Law.

"Bill Casey is a consummate law enforcement officer who brings tremendous experience to the job of chief investigator," said Spitzer. "I know that under his guidance our investigations bureau will take great strides toward making New York a better, safer place to live."

As Chief Investigator, Casey will supervise and direct the activities of 180 investigators and support staffers mounting criminal and civil investigations throughout the state. Investigations may be initiated directly by the Attorney General or at the request of a state agency, division or department.

Casey, 54, is a much-decorated veteran of the New York City Police Department. He rose through the ranks during his 30-year career, serving as patrol officer, commander of the department’s intelligence and investigations units, drug enforcement officer, internal affairs officer, auto crimes investigator and commanding officer in numerous precincts, among other assignments.

Casey’s appointment drew immediate praise from the law enforcement community.

" Spitzer is to be applauded because in appointing Bill Casey he got one of the finest of the finest," said former New York City Police Commissioner William Bratton. "Bill Casey is extraordinarily hard-working, dedicated and thorough, but above all he’s fair. I can’t think of a finer choice for chief investigator."

Casey graduated from the New York Institute of Technology in 1977 and earned a master’s degree from Long Island University in 1979. He also graduated from several specialized police training programs, including the FBI National Academy and the Police Management Institute at Columbia University.
