A.G. Schneiderman Lauds New York's Online Voter Registration System

NEW YORK-- Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman today lauded Governor Cuomo’s plan to allow online voter registration in New York State. Today’s announcement comes in the wake of a decision by Pennsylvania officials to cancel plans to allow online voter registration and online absentee ballot application this year in that state.

“Governor Cuomo’s announcement that New York State will allow online voter registration is a welcome development for all who share the goal of increasing voter participation. It was also a striking contrast to the decision from Pennsylvania that our neighboring state is abandoning a previously announced plan to let people register to vote or apply for absentee ballots online,” said Attorney General Schneiderman. “In this election year, too many states are making it more difficult to vote when they should be making it easier. Over generations, Americans have torn down barriers to voting in order to make our democracy more inclusive, and our government more representative of all its citizens. My office will be vigilant in protecting the right to vote and aggressive in carrying on the American tradition of tearing down barriers to full voter participation.”
