Candlelight Vigil Scheduled To Launch Victims' Week Remembrance
Attorney General Spitzer today announced that on Sunday, April 18, 2004, he will join the Downstate Coalition for Crime Victims in hosting the 19th Annual Crime Victims' Candlelight Vigil to commemorate National Victims' Rights Week.
The ceremony brings together hundreds of crime victims' advocates, survivors, and law enforcement for tribute, healing, and awareness.
The program entitled: Victims Rights -- America's Values will mix moments of reflection, musical enrichment and art. Volunteer advocates will be recognized for their efforts on behalf of victims rights, justice, and assistance. It is anticipated that homicide victims' survivors, as well as the victims of sexual assault, abuse, DWI, and the World Trade Center attacks will attend the event.
"By participating in this vigil we pay tribute to victims of crime," said Spitzer. "We also recognize the impact of crime on our society and renew our commitment to the values we all share justice, equality, peace and security."
The public is invited to attend the 2:00 p.m. Ceremony at West End Collegiate Church located at 77th Street and West End Avenues (Between Broadway and West End Avenues). The church is accessible to the 79th Street IRT subway station or the 79th Street Crosstown Bus (M79).
