Chief Of Medicaid Fraud Control Unit Selected

Attorney General Spitzer today announced the selection of José Maldonado as Deputy Attorney General, Director for the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit.

"José Maldonado brings experience as a top-flight agency head, consumer advocate, and law enforcement official to the Department of Law," Spitzer said. "His leadership in consumer affairs and extensive prosecutorial background ensures integrity in the field of managed care and other emerging health care issues."

The Medicaid Fraud Control Unit is part of the Criminal Division of the Department of Law. It investigates and prosecutes actions emanating from nursing homes, hospitals, and others in the Medicaid system throughout New York. In addition it reviews complaints and prosecutes patient abuse in health care facilities. Deputy Attorney General Debra L.W. Cohn heads the Criminal Division.

Maldonado is a graduate of Columbia College and earned his law degree from New York University School of Law.

Currently, Maldonado is serving as Commissioner/Executive Director of the NewYork City Gambling Control Commission. Prior to that, he was the Commissioner for the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs and Department of Juvenile Justice. He also served as Chief Assistant District Attorney at the Office of Special Narcotics; Assistant Commissioner for the New York City Police Department; and Assistant District Attorney at the New York County District Attorney’s Office. He was a Law Clerk for the United States Court of Appeals, Fifth and Eleventh Circuits located in Atlanta, Georgia.

While in private practice, Maldonado was associated with New York City-based firms of Weil, Gotshal, & Manges; and LeBoeuf, Lamb, Leiby & MacRae.

Maldonado is a native New Yorker and resident of Kings County. He serves on the Board of Trustees for New York University Law School; and on the Boards of the East Harlem School at Exodus House; and the Brooklyn Children’s Museum. He is a member of the Puerto Rican Bar Association.
