Spitzer Expresses Support For Key Fire Initiatives
Attorney General Spitzer today pledged his support for two key legislative initiatives that he said would help enhance capabilities and protect the integrity of volunteer fire departments and emergency service organizations across the state.
"We have a responsibility to ensure that volunteer firefighters and emergency service personnel have the tools they need to do their job safely and effectively," Spitzer said.
Spitzer made his comments at the annual meeting of the Association of Fire Districts of the State of New York, which was meeting in Albany.
He urged state lawmakers to expand the New York State Emergency Services Revolving Account to include fire districts and independent non-profit fire and ambulance organizations. Such organizations are now precluded from accessing low-interest loans under the program.
Spitzer also called for full funding of the revolving loan fund, which supports purchase of state-of-the-art lifesaving equipment, emergency vehicles and other equipment, and for making improvements to facilities.
In addition, Spitzer endorsed a proposal (S.2657/A.4736) to allow the chief officer of a fire company to obtain from the State Division of Criminal Justice Services a confidential report on possible arson convictions of prospective members. This background check is important in ensuring the reputation and integrity of fire department.
Both measures are considered top legislative priorities for the volunteer fire departments and emergency service organizations. Both measures also help with the recruitment and retention of qualified personnel.
