Spitzer Statement On Appeals Court Upholding Settlement Of Tobacco Money Between State And Local Governments
The Appellate Division of State Supreme Court today unanimously upheld a lower court consent decree which established a formula for dividing New York’s share of national tobacco settlement monies among the state, New York City and all counties across the state.
Attorney General Spitzer issued this statement in response to the decision:
"We’re pleased by the Court’s ruling, which affirms our position that the tobacco settlement funds are being shared with our local governments in a fair and equitable manner."
"This means we’re one step closer to reaching a final settlement in the case. And it means that we’re one step closer to insuring that Big Tobacco begins to repay the state, its local governments and our taxpayers for the billions of dollars of damages that the industry’s actions have caused over the years."
As part of a final settlement, New York is due to receive $25 billion over the next 25 years. New York and a number of local governments sued the tobacco industry to recoup costs associated with treating Medicaid patients for tobacco-related illnesses.
