Spitzer Urges Court To Keep Cross Sound Cable Operating

Attorney General Spitzer today filed legal papers opposing a request by the State of Connecticut that would shut off the flow of electricity from the Connecticut coast to Long Island via the cross-sound cable.

The 24-mile long bulk power cable is a transmission line that runs beneath the Long Island Sound. While the cable was completed in 2002, it was not operating prior to the August 14 blackout due to permitting objections from the State of Connecticut. Since August 14th the cable has been operating under an order by the U.S. Secretary of Energy.

"A robust transmission network is crucial to the reliability and security of our electrical system," said Spitzer. "The continued operation of the cross-sound cable is important for ensuring that the power supply is sufficient to meet demand during this summer's peak usage period."

Spitzer filed his brief as Amicus Curiae, with the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in the matter of Blumenthal v.Abraham.
