Statement By A.G. Schneiderman On President Obama’s Support Of Marriage Equality
NEW YORK—The following statement can be attributed to Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman on President Obama’s support of marriage equality:
“Today is an historic day for our country. President Obama's announcement to fully support the freedom to marry for gay and lesbian couples is a huge step towards equality. There is no doubt that having the President's support on this important issue will help ensure all Americans are treated equally under the laws that govern our state and country. It also boosts our efforts to end the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Actthat continues to deny legally married New Yorkers hundreds of federal rights and benefits.
“The President should be commended for his leadership and thoughtfulness on this issue. The movement for equality has come a long way, and my office will continue to fight hard every day so that all New Yorkers and all Americans can proudly live in a country that treats them equally under the law.”
