Statement By Attorney General Eliot Spitzer Regarding The 30th Anniversary Of The Roe V. Wade Decision

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the Supreme Court's historic Roe v. Wade decision. The significance of this anniversary and the importance of the decision for women cannot be overstated.

The fact that 30 years have passed cannot allow any of us to take this decision, and the right it recognized, for granted. In Roe v. Wade, the U.S. Supreme Court recognized the right of women in America to determine their futures by protecting their ability to choose whether and when to become a parent. Rendered at a time when women were striving to attain equal rights in our nation, Roe v. Wade continues to be a vital cornerstone of the claim of all women's equality and well-being in our society.

We must continue to be vigilant in working to protect the rights identified in Roe v. Wade. My office has worked on many different levels, and will continue to do so, to ensure that women have unobstructed and safe access to reproductive health services in this state, and that the right to reproductive choice is protected.
