Statement By The New York State Attorney General Andrew M. Cuomo On Executive Budget Proposal

“New York faces serious fiscal challenges and this year’s Executive Budget acknowledges the reality of the State’s fiscal condition. Our governmental leaders must lead by example, and I have submitted an appropriation request for the 2010-11 fiscal year that is 10.1 percent lower on an All Funds basis than the current appropriation for the Attorney General’s office.

“The Governor’s Executive Budget proposes a number of hard but necessary actions. It also proposes a number of long-overdue reforms in areas ranging from government consolidation to mandate relief. In the past, the good intentions to control spending and reform government that were included in proposed budgets have given way to more spending than the State can afford and rejection of needed reforms in the enacted budget. The real test of this year’s budget process will be the ability to rally the public and the legislature to take the tough actions that are necessary for the long-term interests of the State.”
